As it stands, the four teams to occupy the top of the Premier league are either from Manchester or London. Little stands between these sides at the moment but October’s fixtures are set to rearrange the results table somewhat. Manchester City occupy first place even though they have played the most difficult fixtures thus far (one could argue). And in fourth place Chelsea, as they started slowly with a loss to Burnley at the beginning of the season, as well as losing at home to the Citizens. In between them stand Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Who have seemed unstoppable but, at this point have fallen just short of Manchester City.
Chelsea, a team that for the past two decades have been a prominent figure in the English Premier League. From winning the league last year to losing in their first game this season, a close eye has hovered over Stamford Bridge. They’re now six points behind the Manchester sides with a large amount between them in Goal difference (Chelsea scoring a lot less.) However, October holds in store some potentially favourable fixtures for Chelsea! Two out of their next three Premier League games are against sides currently fighting to get out of relegation. On saturday they face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. A side that have not yet scored this season. Chelsea will be looking to exploit this statistic in order to improve not only their results tally but their goal difference. On the 28th of October they face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, a side that have only won one game out of seven. Again this provides Chelsea with a great opportunity to improve their position in the league.
It’s not that simple for Chelsea though. In the Premier League every team is a fierce competitor that can’t be underestimated. Chelsea fans will be hoping that their XI have already learnt this after their loss to Burnley and to Manchester City. The withdrawal of Alvaro Morata from the squad due to injury places Antonio Conte in a difficult situation. Two options find themselves in Michy Batshuayi and Eden Hazard as a replacement for the 24 year old Spaniard. Antonio Conte will be more inclined to choose Eden Hazard which then creates further tension in the squad as it shows Conte’s lack of faith in his reserve forward. Chelsea have to overcome problems such as this if they’re to make the most of this opportunistic month.
Manchester City could also be considered quite fortunate this October as two out of their next three Premier League games are against opponents in the lower half of the table, making for a great opportunity to spectate the League no.1 side in their element. One could potentially argue that they might find difficult opponents in Burnley at home but their form and record against teams in the top half of the league table would suggest otherwise.
Manchester United have had a great start to the season with the likes of Lukaku and Rashford scoring spectacular goals, making the Red Devils’ tickets hotter than ever! However there has been speculation over whether Manchester United have had much easier opponents than the other top four clubs so far. This speculation becomes redundant this weekend as they head to Anfield to face Liverpool. A difficult game for any side in the Premier League to beat (excusing Manchester City). Throughout the month they also face Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford who wait just behind them in the league standings and Huddersfield who until recently were showing a lot of promise and could still prove to be difficult opponents.
As it stands the North-West are winning the battle over the South-East but as the month progresses this all may change! Whoever you follow in Premier League football, this October there’s going to be some unforgettable fixtures that could potentially begin to shape the outcome of the 2017/18 season.
